Substance Abuse Counseling

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 21.25 million people ages 12 and older were diagnosed with a substance use disorder in 2014. Unfortunately, that number continues to rise. Substance use disorders know no bounds. It affects people from all walks of life and all age groups. Substance use disorder does not have to be a terminal diagnosis. Substance abuse is treatable, and many people do recover.

The research tells us that there is a strong correlation between substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders (i.e. depression, anxiety, etc.). In order to understand and treat the client fully, we use a multidisciplinary treatment team that works together to address the multifaceted levels of substance abuse. Our team works together, all under one roof, to monitor progress and achieve treatment goals. Our team consists of a psychiatrist, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, licensed chemical dependency counselors, a health psychologist, and a marriage and family therapist.

We begin with an assessment to grasp a clear picture of the client’s current functioning. This will also give us an accurate diagnosis (if there is one) and help us identify any other co-occurring disorders. An individualized treatment plan is discussed and implemented based on each client’s needs. Some common treatment goals include:

  • Maintain abstinence from all mood-altering substance use
  • Identify triggers that lead to substance use
  • Explore and identify positive support system
  • Learn new coping skills to combat cravings
  • Psychoeducation about addiction for client and family
  • Reconnecting/restoring relationships with family members
  • Develop a positive self-image and self-talk
  • Learn healthy communication skills
  • Learn healthy family boundaries
